Dragons in Children's Literature

Well, in my previous post, I included a brief look at two picture books of dragons. Of course, this now begs the question: what are some others good books with dragons?

Off the top of my head, some of my favorites are:

The Dragon Machine (Ages 5+)
The Dragon Snatcher (Ages 4+)
Dragon Song, Dragon Singer, and Dragon Drums (aka Harper Hall series) by Anne McCaffrey (Ages 10+)
Ignis by Gina Wilson and P.J. Lynch (Ages 4+)
Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini (Ages 10+)
Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke (Ages 9+)

What are some of YOUR favorite books--picture or chapter that include dragons.

I suspect this means that I will now start a list of favorite books with dragons. . . . The list now includes 9. Oh, that reminds me--the list of librarians in children's lit? It's up to 46 now. A far cry from 100--but still growing.

  1. There are a lot of children's books with dragons in them. The ones I thought of off the top of my head were:

Patricia Wrede, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles

    Donn Kushner, A Book Dragon

Diana Wynne Jones. Dark Lord of Derkholm and Year of the Griffin.

    L. Frank Baum, Tik-Tok of Oz has as a character Quox the Dragon.

    Anne McCaffrey's Pern series.

    Etc. etc.....

  3. I love the Dragon Singer books set on Pern!

But one of my first dragon loves was Branstookah in "Shadow Castle" by Marian Cockrell

  4. There is a picture book by Carmen Deedy called The Library Dragon, but you have to love puns to enjoy it.

Patrica Brigg's stories Dragon Bone and Dragon Blood (probably considered young adult) are both great reads.

Hope I'm not doubleposting, things have gone strange on me...

The Dragon the Lived under Manhattan by E.W. Hildrick was a childhood favorite, as were:

    My Father's Dragon

A Book of Dragons by Manning - Sanders

There's a great book called, I think, the Patchwork Dragon & Other Stories, which I can't find on my shelf or on Amazon.

Lastly, for teens and adults, the dragons in Stanislaw Lem's The Cyberiad are fun. (This book would be #1 on a list of Robot Books.)

  7. My 2 favorite dragon picture books are The Sons of the Dragon King, by Ed Young, and The Book of Beasts, by E. Nesbit/Inga Moore. My favorite chapter book dragon is R. Dragon, in Rosemary Manning's Green Smoke (an English Book, now sadly out of print).

  8. I loved The Last Dragon by Silvana DiMari. It was a 2007 Batchelder Honor book. I would recommend it to anyone who liked Funke's Dragon Rider.
